HIV Proviral DNA Quantitative Test (Blood)
This test measures the amount of HIV genetic material (DNA) in your blood to help track how your infection is progressing and guide treatment decisions.

What This Test Measures
The test detects the presence of HIV genetic material (proviral DNA) in your blood. This DNA comes from active HIV particles and can indicate how much virus is present in your body. It’s not the same as measuring HIV protein (viral load) but provides complementary information about your infection status.
Why It’s Done
Your healthcare provider may order this test if you’re newly diagnosed with HIV, during treatment to check how well it’s working, or if you have symptoms that suggest your viral load might be changing. It’s also used in research or specialized care plans.
Sample Collection and Preparation
A small blood sample is taken from a vein, usually in your arm. The blood is processed to extract the DNA for testing. This test is typically done on whole blood.
Test Results and Interpretation
Results are usually reported as a count of proviral DNA copies per milliliter of blood. A low count often means your HIV is under control with treatment, while a higher count may signal treatment resistance or other factors affecting your health.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
