What Does This Test Measure?
The test detects IgG antibodies specific to HSV. These antibodies develop after an initial infection and remain in your system for life, indicating past exposure to the virus. This is not a test for active infection but rather a marker of immunity.
Why Might I Need This Test?
Your healthcare provider may recommend this test if you have symptoms suggestive of HSV (e.g., sores, pain, or recurrent outbreaks), if you are planning pregnancy and have concerns about HSV transmission, or if you have a history of HSV to monitor immunity.
Sample Collection and Preparation
A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm. The sample is processed to separate serum (liquid part of blood without clotting factors), which is then tested for HSV IgG antibodies using an immunoassay method.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is needed. You may eat and drink normally on the day of the test. If you are on blood-thinning medications, inform your provider beforehand.
