What is this test?
This blood test measures cholesterol in intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL-C) and very-low-density lipoprotein subtype 3 particles (VLDL-3C). These lipoproteins transport cholesterol and triglycerides through the bloodstream.
Why might I need this test?
It may be ordered to evaluate cholesterol carried by remnant lipoproteins, particularly in someone with high triglycerides, abnormal cholesterol results, or cardiovascular risk factors. It is usually interpreted alongside a complete lipid panel.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is drawn and separated into serum or plasma. A laboratory then measures the cholesterol content of the specified lipoprotein fractions using specialized laboratory methods.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting for 8 to 12 hours may be required, and water is generally allowed. Follow the instructions provided with the order; do not stop prescribed medication unless your clinician tells you to do so.
Reference range
Optimal: <100 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
