Why Is This Test Done?
Your doctor may order an LH test to evaluate fertility, diagnose hormonal disorders, or check for conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in women, or low testosterone in men. It can also be part of monitoring for certain cancers or thyroid disorders.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is needed, but you may be asked to fast for 8–12 hours before the test if it’s part of a broader metabolic or hormonal panel. Bring any medications you’re currently taking to your appointment.
What Happens During the Test?
A healthcare provider will draw blood from a vein in your arm. The sample is sent to a lab for analysis using an immunoassay method to detect LH levels accurately.
What Are Possible Results?
Results are reported as a concentration of LH in the blood. While reference ranges vary by lab, higher or lower-than-expected levels may indicate underlying health concerns that require further evaluation.
