What Lipids Are Measured?
Your blood contains several types of fats, including cholesterol and triglycerides. These tests help assess your risk for heart disease by measuring levels of total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol), and triglycerides. Some panels may also include non-HDL cholesterol or lipoprotein(a).
How Glucose Is Measured in This Test
Glucose is a simple sugar that your body uses for energy. This test measures your current blood glucose level, which can help monitor diabetes or prediabetes. Some panels may also report hemoglobin A1c (a measure of average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months) if requested.
Why This Test Matters for Your Health
High lipid levels (especially LDL) or abnormal glucose can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, or diabetes. Regular monitoring helps you manage these risks with diet, exercise, or medication if needed.
What to Expect Before the Test
You may be asked to fast (not eat or drink except water) for 8–12 hours before the test. Your blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm. If you have diabetes, your doctor may also check for hemoglobin A1c separately.
