Left Ventricular Basal Septal Time to Peak Systolic Velocity by Tissue Doppler Imaging
This echocardiography-based test measures when the left ventricle’s basal septal muscle reaches its peak systolic velocity during tissue Doppler imaging (TDI). It is used as part of assessing left ventricular systolic function.

What the Test Measures
Tissue Doppler imaging uses ultrasound to measure the speed and timing of heart-muscle motion. This result indicates the time at which the basal septal segment reaches maximum systolic motion during the heartbeat.
Why It Is Performed
The measurement may be used alongside other echocardiography findings to evaluate left ventricular function, particularly in people with suspected or known heart weakness, heart disease, or symptoms such as shortness of breath.
How the Test Is Done
A technician or clinician places an ultrasound probe on the chest or abdomen to obtain heart images. The tissue Doppler measurements are taken from the basal septal region of the left ventricle while the heart is beating.
Understanding the Result
This timing is interpreted together with S-wave velocity, other Doppler measurements, heart structure, symptoms, and the overall echocardiogram. A result should not be judged in isolation, and your clinician can explain whether it is typical for your situation.
