What is this test?

This test measures IgE antibodies your immune system makes in response to a mixture of mold allergens. The panel may also include total IgE, which reflects the overall amount of IgE in the blood.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to help evaluate possible mold allergy, especially if you have wheezing, coughing, nasal congestion, or eye symptoms after exposure to damp or moldy environments.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected and analyzed in a laboratory using an immunoassay. The report identifies the measured mold-specific IgE result and, when included, the total IgE result.

How do I prepare for the test?

Fasting is generally not required. Tell your clinician about your symptoms, mold exposure, allergic conditions, medications, and any recent immunotherapy, because these factors can help interpret the results.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

An elevated mold-specific IgE result indicates immune sensitization to one or more molds in the tested mixture, but it does not by itself confirm that mold is causing your symptoms. A total IgE elevation can occur with allergies and may also be associated with certain parasitic infections or immune-system conditions. Results should be interpreted with your medical history and examination by your clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I have mold allergy?
It indicates that your immune system has produced IgE antibodies to at least one mold in the mixture. Your clinician must compare the result with your exposure history and symptoms to assess clinical significance.
What does the total IgE measurement mean?
Total IgE measures the overall amount of IgE in your blood. It can support an evaluation for allergic disease, but it is not specific to mold or to any single allergic condition.
Can medications or immunotherapy affect the results?
Certain allergy treatments, particularly antihistamines, can affect IgE testing. Do not stop prescribed medications unless your clinician instructs you to do so.
