What is this test?

This test measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies against a panel of molds known as Mold Allergen Mix 2. IgE is an immune-system antibody that can develop in response to a particular allergen.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order it when symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, wheezing, or skin reactions could be related to mold exposure. It may also be used to help identify which mold allergens are likely triggers.

How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected and tested in a laboratory for IgE antibodies to the mold allergens in the panel. The RAST name refers to the radioallergosorbent testing approach, although many laboratories use modern nonradioactive IgE assays.

How do I prepare for the test?

No special preparation is usually required. Tell your clinician about any medicines you take, including antihistamines, because they may affect the interpretation of allergy testing.

Reference range

Adult: 10-40 U/LN/A

Frequently asked questions

Does a positive result mean I am allergic to mold?
It indicates that your immune system has developed IgE antibodies to one or more tested mold allergens. Your clinician can explain whether this finding is consistent with your symptoms and circumstances.
What symptoms can mold allergy cause?
Depending on the person and exposure, mold allergy may cause sneezing, runny or congested nose, watery eyes, wheezing, coughing, or skin symptoms.
Can I take allergy medicines before this test?
Discuss antihistamine use with your clinician before testing. Some medicines can reduce skin-test responses, and their potential effect on this blood test should be reviewed individually.
