What is this test?

Magnetic resonance angiography, or MRA, uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images of blood vessels. This version examines the abdominal aorta without injecting contrast dye.

Why might I need this test?

The test may be ordered to investigate symptoms such as abdominal or leg pain, cold or weak feet, or unexplained pulses. It can also assess known narrowing, an aneurysm, prior vascular procedures, or a possible clot.

How is the test performed?

You usually lie still on a table while the scanner images the abdominal aorta and nearby blood vessels. The examination is painless, although the scanner may make loud knocking sounds, and it generally takes less than an hour.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the imaging center's instructions, especially if you have a pacemaker, implanted medical device, or metal implant. Tell the care team if you have claustrophobia, significant kidney disease, or a possibility of pregnancy, even though no contrast dye is used.

Frequently asked questions

Does this MRA use contrast dye?
No. The term “without contrast” means an intravenous contrast dye is not used. Some facilities may still refer to the images as angiographic images because special computer processing is used.
Is magnetic resonance angiography painful?
The test is generally painless. You may feel pressure from the scanner coils or hear loud mechanical sounds, and you must remain still during image acquisition.
Can I have this test if I have a metal implant?
Many modern implants can be scanned safely, but the imaging center must review the device type and any accompanying information. Always provide details about pacemakers, implants, and metal fragments before the examination.
