What is this test?

Magnetic resonance angiography, or MRA, creates detailed images of blood vessels. This test evaluates the vessels in both lower extremities and is ordered without contrast according to the test name.

Why might I need this test?

Lower-extremity MRA may be used to investigate reduced circulation, leg pain, swelling, numbness, or a suspected blood-vessel disorder. It can help evaluate arteries that supply the legs and other vessels affected by conditions such as peripheral arterial disease.

How is the test performed?

You lie on a table inside an MRI scanner while images of the vessels in your legs are acquired. The test is generally painless, although the scanner can be noisy, and you may be asked to remain still.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the imaging center's instructions, particularly regarding metal objects, implanted devices, and medications. Tell staff if you have a pacemaker, metal implant, claustrophobia, or any other health concern before the scan.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an X-ray test?
No. MRA uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images of blood vessels, so it does not use ionizing radiation.
Does this test use contrast dye?
The test name specifies that it is performed without contrast. Always tell the imaging team about any prior contrast reaction or kidney problems.
Will the test hurt?
The test itself is usually painless. You may feel pressure or warmth in the scanner, and enclosed spaces can be uncomfortable for some people.
