What is this test?

Spinal MRI is an imaging test, rather than a blood or urine laboratory test. It creates detailed pictures of the spinal cord, backbone, discs, nerves, and nearby tissues to help evaluate symptoms such as neck or back pain, numbness, weakness, or difficulty walking.

Why might I need this test?

A spine MRI may be ordered to investigate persistent back or neck pain, nerve compression, disc disease, spinal stenosis, injury, infection, inflammation, or a mass. It can also help assess the spinal cord and the severity of conditions affecting the spine.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves into a large MRI scanner. The technologist may ask you to remain still and may position you to obtain images of the requested area. Unlike a CT scan, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, and this version is performed without injected contrast.

How do I prepare for the test?

Fasting is usually not required. Remove metal items, such as jewelry, watches, hairpins, and removable hearing aids, and tell the care team about implants, medication patches, pregnancy, claustrophobia, or any other medical conditions before the scan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a spine MRI without contrast use radiation?
No. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than ionizing radiation.
Why might the order mention multiple views?
Multiple views show the spine from different angles and may help evaluate vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, and surrounding structures more thoroughly.
What if I am pregnant or have a metal implant?
Tell the imaging team before the test. Many MRI-compatible implants can be scanned safely, but the team must review the exact device and your circumstances.
