What is this test?

Magnetic resonance angiography, or MRA, is an MRI-based imaging test that shows blood vessels in the neck. The “without contrast” designation means no contrast dye is injected for the examination.

Why might I need this test?

A neck MRA may be used to evaluate the carotid and vertebral arteries when there is concern about narrowing, blockage, aneurysm, or another blood-vessel abnormality. It may also be ordered after symptoms such as a transient ischemic attack, stroke, or a pulsatile neck mass.

How is the test performed?

You lie on a table inside an MRI scanner while the machine takes several images. The scan may be noisy and can take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the imaging protocol.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the imaging center's instructions and tell the care team about any implanted metal devices, claustrophobia, or possible pregnancy. Fasting is generally not required, but the center may provide specific preparation instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test use contrast dye?
No. This is a noncontrast MRA, so no contrast dye is injected for the examination.
Is a neck MRA the same as a routine neck MRI?
No. A routine neck MRI focuses on soft tissues and organs, while MRA specifically highlights the blood vessels.
What happens if I have a metal implant?
Tell the imaging staff about the implant before the scan. Many modern devices are MRI-compatible, but the MRI safety team must confirm whether it is safe for you.
