What is this test?
Magnetic resonance angiography, or MRA, is an MRI technique that highlights blood vessels in and around the spine. In this examination, contrast dye is not injected.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test to evaluate the spinal circulation when symptoms suggest a vascular problem. It may help assess blood vessels for narrowing, aneurysms, abnormal connections, or other blood-flow patterns.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table inside an MRI scanner while images are collected. The scanner makes loud knocking and ringing sounds, and the technologist may ask you to remain still or change positions.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the imaging team about metal implants, medication patches, pregnancy, or claustrophobia. Remove items such as jewelry, keys, and cards with magnetic strips when directed. Because no contrast dye is used, contrast-related preparation is generally unnecessary.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may indicate narrowing of a spinal blood vessel, an aneurysm, an abnormal vessel connection, or altered blood flow. Results should be interpreted together with symptoms, examination findings, and other imaging tests by your clinician.
Short name
Spinal MRA without contrast
