What is this test?
This is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination of the left wrist. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed pictures of the wrist without injecting contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
A wrist MRI may be recommended to evaluate persistent pain, swelling, or weakness, or to assess injuries involving the bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, or nerves. It may also help identify a suspected fracture, tendon tear, or other structural problem.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while the scanner images your wrist. The technician will keep you still during the examination, which usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. The scanner may make loud knocking or clicking sounds.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is generally not required for a wrist MRI without contrast. Remove metal items, jewelry, watches, and cards with magnetic strips before the scan. Tell the care team if you have a pacemaker, another implanted electronic device, metal fragments, or are pregnant or may be pregnant.
