What is this test?
Breast implant MRI is an imaging test that creates detailed pictures using magnetic fields and radio waves. The version without contrast does not require intravenous contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
It may be recommended to evaluate an implant after symptoms such as swelling, pain, hardness, changes in breast shape, or concern about implant integrity. It can also help assess implant position and complications involving nearby tissue.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table while a large MRI machine produces several sets of images. The scan usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, although exact timing varies, and you may need to remain still during the images.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the imaging team about the implant type, any medical devices, and prior implant problems. Because MRI uses strong magnets, follow all safety screening instructions and bring relevant implant information if available.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Findings may indicate implant rupture, leakage, folding, malposition, or a reaction involving surrounding tissue. The results are interpreted together with symptoms, physical examination, and other imaging or clinical information because not every implant problem is visible on MRI.
