What is this test?
Breast implant MRI is a magnetic resonance imaging examination that creates detailed pictures of breast implants and the surrounding breast tissue. It can help assess implant integrity, position, and changes in nearby tissue.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be used to evaluate suspected implant problems, such as rupture, leakage, folds, or displacement. It may also help monitor implants or investigate unexplained symptoms such as pain, swelling, or changes in breast appearance.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table inside an MRI scanner, and the technologist will position the scanner over the breast area. The machine uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images. Because no contrast dye is used, an injection is not required.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the imaging staff if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, or other electronic device. You may be asked to remove jewelry, piercings, and other metal objects. Follow the facility's instructions, and tell the technologist if you feel claustrophobic or cannot lie still.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
MRI findings may show implant rupture, leakage, malposition, or changes in surrounding tissue. Interpretation depends on the implant type, MRI technique, and the images obtained, so the radiologist will consider the examination as a whole. Results should be reviewed with your healthcare professional.
