What is this test?
Breast MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed pictures of breast tissue. This version images the left breast and does not use injected contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
A breast MRI may be used to investigate a breast lump or other suspicious finding, assess the extent of a known breast problem, examine certain high-risk situations, or evaluate breast implants. Your clinician will explain the specific reason for the scan.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table inside the MRI scanner while the machine takes images from several angles. The scan may be somewhat noisy, but it is generally painless. A scan without contrast does not involve an injection, although additional imaging with contrast may be needed if the initial images require further evaluation.
How do I prepare for the test?
Remove jewelry, watches, hairpins, and other metal items before entering the scanner area. Tell the imaging staff about any implants, heart devices, or metal in your body. If you might be pregnant, notify the staff before the examination.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
MRI findings may show no significant abnormality, reveal a benign-appearing finding, or identify an area that needs additional evaluation. If suspicious tissue is detected, the results may guide further imaging, biopsy, or specialist follow-up. Implant-related problems can also be assessed when appropriate.
