What is this test?

Breast implant MRI is an imaging test that creates detailed pictures of breast implants and the surrounding breast tissue. This version is performed without intravenous contrast dye.

Why might I need this test?

It may be recommended when there are concerns about implant damage, pain, swelling, or changes in the breast. It can also help evaluate an abnormal finding detected during another breast imaging examination.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table inside an MRI scanner. The machine uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce images, and you will need to remain still during the examination.

How do I prepare for the test?

Tell the imaging center about all implants, metal devices, and other medical conditions. The center will screen you for MRI safety and provide instructions; fasting is generally not required for this scan.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Results may show that the implant is intact and functioning as expected. Abnormal findings can suggest implant shell damage, rupture, silicone leakage, or changes in surrounding tissue, and the radiologist will compare the images with any prior studies.

Frequently asked questions

Does this test use contrast dye?
No. This version of breast implant MRI is performed without intravenous contrast.
Can MRI determine whether my implant has ruptured?
MRI is often used to assess implant integrity and identify signs of rupture or leakage, although the findings must be interpreted with your clinical history and other imaging.
Is breast implant MRI safe with other implants or metal devices?
Safety depends on the type and MRI compatibility of every implanted device. The imaging center will review your medical history and devices before the scan.
