Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Breast Without Contrast
A breast MRI creates detailed images without injecting an IV contrast dye, helping evaluate breast tissue, lesions, and some implants.

What is this test?
Breast MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the breasts. In this test, no intravenous contrast dye is given.
Why might I need this test?
It may be used to further evaluate a breast lump, unclear mammogram or ultrasound finding, the extent of a known breast problem, or certain breast implants. It may also be used for people at higher risk of breast cancer.
How is the test performed?
You usually lie on a table inside the MRI scanner while a technologist operates the equipment and takes several images. The scan may take 30 to 60 minutes, and you may be asked to remain still or change positions.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the imaging center's instructions and tell the staff about any implants, claustrophobia, metal in your body, or possible pregnancy. You may need to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, and other metal-containing items before the scan.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
An abnormal MRI may show a suspicious area, an implant problem, or another condition that needs further evaluation. Findings are interpreted together with your medical history, physical exam, mammogram, and ultrasound, and a suspicious result may require additional imaging or a biopsy. MRI results alone do not establish a diagnosis.
