What is this test?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the left clavicle creates detailed pictures of the left collarbone and nearby soft tissues. It is performed without contrast, meaning no contrast dye is injected.
Why might I need this test?
This MRI may be used to evaluate a suspected fracture, persistent shoulder or upper-chest pain, infection, inflammation, or a mass. It can also show how the collarbone and surrounding structures relate to one another.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table while the scanner takes images of the left collarbone area. The machine makes loud knocking and ringing sounds, and the exam usually takes 20 to 45 minutes.
How do I prepare for the test?
Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners, jewelry, or hair accessories. Tell the care team if you have a pacemaker, other implanted electronic device, metal fragments in your body, or a possibility of pregnancy.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may include a fracture, bone marrow or soft-tissue changes, infection, inflammation, or another structural abnormality. The radiologist interprets the images in relation to your symptoms and examination, so results should be discussed with your clinician.
