What is this test?

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the heart. The cine, or moving-image, portion shows how the heart chambers contract and relax.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to evaluate heart pumping function, examine heart-wall motion, or investigate symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, chest discomfort, or suspected heart disease.

How is the test performed?

You lie on a table inside an MRI scanner while images of the heart are recorded, usually with your breath held at certain times. A noncontrast study does not require injected contrast dye.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the imaging center's instructions and tell the staff about any implanted devices, metal objects, pregnancy possibility, or claustrophobia. Fasting is generally not required for a noncontrast cardiac MRI unless your clinician specifically requests it.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Abnormal findings may indicate reduced heart pumping function, impaired heart-wall motion, or structural heart problems. Results should be interpreted by a radiologist and your clinician in the context of your symptoms, prior tests, and medical history.

Short name

Cardiac MRI for Heart Function

Frequently asked questions

Does this cardiac MRI use contrast?
No. This version is performed without intravenous contrast, although your imaging center may perform other MRI sequences as part of the examination.
Is the test painful?
The MRI itself is generally painless, but the scanner is noisy and the narrow space may feel uncomfortable. Tell the staff if you experience anxiety or claustrophobia.
How long does the test take?
The duration varies by facility and examination protocol, but cardiac MRI commonly takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Your clinician or imaging center can provide a more specific estimate.
