What is this test?
A head MRI is an imaging test that produces detailed pictures of the brain, skull, and surrounding structures. This version is performed without intravenous contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
A head MRI may be used to investigate headaches, dizziness, weakness, seizures, vision changes, head injury, or suspected conditions affecting the brain. It can also help monitor certain diseases or treatments.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a narrow table that moves into a large scanner. The machine uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images, and you may hear knocking or clicking sounds during the scan.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the care team about metal implants, heart devices, piercings, or a possibility of pregnancy. Remove jewelry and other metal objects and follow the facility's instructions about eating, medications, and claustrophobia.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
Abnormal findings may include changes involving the brain tissue, blood vessels, skull, or nearby structures, depending on the reason for the MRI. Some findings are not specific to one condition and are interpreted together with symptoms, examination, and other tests.
Short name
Head MRI without contrast
