Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the Lower Extremity Without Contrast
An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues without injected contrast.

What is this test?
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, creates detailed pictures of the area being examined using magnetic fields and radio waves. A lower-extremity MRI may evaluate the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle, foot, or nearby nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Why might I need this test?
A clinician may order this MRI to investigate persistent pain, swelling, weakness, numbness, reduced movement, or an injury. It is also used to evaluate fractures, joint problems, tendon or ligament tears, soft-tissue abnormalities, and some bone conditions.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a padded table that moves into the MRI scanner. The technologist may position the leg being examined and ask you to remain still, sometimes for several sequences lasting 20 to 45 minutes. Images are reviewed by a radiologist, and the results are sent to your ordering clinician.
How do I prepare for the test?
No fasting or special preparation is usually required for an MRI without contrast. Tell the imaging staff about metal implants, pacemaker or other implanted devices, a seizure condition, pregnancy, or any chance of metal fragments in the body, and follow the facility's safety instructions.
