What is this test?
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of the neck. This test is performed without intravenous contrast dye.
Why might I need this test?
A neck MRI may be used to investigate a lump, neck pain, swelling, or symptoms involving the throat, thyroid, salivary glands, or lymph nodes. It can also help evaluate the spinal cord and other soft tissues for abnormalities.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a narrow table that moves into a large MRI machine. The scanner makes various knocking and clicking sounds while taking images, and you may be asked to remain still or briefly hold your breath.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow the instructions provided by the imaging center. Remove jewelry, hearing aids, hair accessories, and other metal or electronic items before the scan. Tell the care team if you have implanted devices, a history of claustrophobia, or any other medical conditions.
Reference range
Adult males: 22-198 U/L; Females: 22-198 U/LN/A
No special preparation required. Inform provider of any chest pain or symptoms.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
The scan may identify or characterize masses, enlarged lymph nodes, inflammation, cysts, or changes involving the thyroid and salivary glands. Your clinician will interpret the images together with your symptoms, examination, and other tests.
