What is this test?

Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, creates detailed pictures of the parotid glands, which are salivary glands located near the ears. This version is performed without injected contrast material.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this scan to investigate a lump, swelling, pain, or suspected blockage in a parotid gland. It can also help assess certain tumors and chronic inflammatory conditions.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves into an MRI scanner. The scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce images, usually without requiring an injection.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions provided by the imaging center. Tell the technologist if you have a pacemaker, other implanted medical device, metal in your body, or a possibility of pregnancy. You may be asked to remove jewelry, hearing aids, and other metal items.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

Abnormal findings may indicate a benign or malignant mass, inflammation, infection, a cyst, or another structural change in the parotid gland. The MRI findings are interpreted together with your symptoms, physical examination, and any other tests. Your clinician will explain the significance of the results for you.

Short name

Parotid Gland MRI Without Contrast

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a parotid gland ultrasound?
No. Ultrasound uses sound waves, while MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create more detailed images of the gland and surrounding tissues.
Why is the scan called “without contrast”?
It means no contrast dye is injected for this examination. This version may be used when contrast is not needed or may be unsafe.
Will I need someone to drive me home?
MRI itself does not usually require sedation, so you can generally leave afterward. If you receive sedating medication or have a condition that affects your balance, follow your clinician's transportation instructions.
