What is this test?

Prostate MRI is an imaging examination that produces detailed pictures of the prostate, seminal vesicles, and surrounding pelvic tissues. It uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than ionizing radiation.

Why might I need this test?

Your clinician may order this test to investigate an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) result, an abnormal digital rectal examination, or symptoms such as urinary difficulty. MRI can identify suspicious areas, evaluate the extent of a known prostate condition, and help target a biopsy.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a movable table inside an MRI machine while images are taken. The test usually takes about 20 to 45 minutes, although the exact time can vary. In this version, intravenous contrast dye is generally not used.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the instructions from the imaging center because bowel preparation or an enema may be requested. Tell the staff about any metal implants, medication patches, or claustrophobia, and do not bring unsecured metal objects into the MRI room.

Frequently asked questions

Does a prostate MRI use radiation?
No. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves and does not use ionizing radiation.
Is contrast dye used in this test?
This version is generally performed without intravenous contrast. The imaging center will confirm the specific protocol before the examination.
Can a prostate MRI diagnose prostate cancer?
It can reveal suspicious areas and show how far a condition may extend, but tissue sampling may still be needed to confirm or rule out cancer.
