What is this test?

This is a magnetic resonance imaging scan of the thoracic spine, the middle section of the backbone between the neck and lower back. It produces detailed images of the vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, nerves, and nearby soft tissues without injecting contrast dye.

Why might I need this test?

A thoracic spine MRI may be ordered to investigate middle-back pain, injury, numbness, weakness, or symptoms suggesting nerve compression. It can also help evaluate disc degeneration, vertebral abnormalities, spinal-cord changes, infection, or a suspicious bone lesion.

How is the test performed?

You will lie on a table that moves into a large MRI machine. The scanner makes loud knocking and buzzing sounds while taking images, and you may be asked to remain still or briefly hold your breath.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow the imaging center's instructions and tell the staff about implants, metal devices, pregnancy, or claustrophobia. Remove jewelry, watches, hairpins, and other metal objects; fasting is usually not required for a scan without contrast.

Frequently asked questions

Is contrast dye used for this MRI?
No. This test is specified as being performed without contrast, so you generally will not receive an IV injection for the scan.
Does an MRI hurt?
The scan itself usually does not hurt, but the machine is noisy and the enclosed space may feel uncomfortable. Tell the staff if you are anxious or claustrophobic.
How soon will the results be available?
A radiologist will review the images and send a report to your ordering clinician. The timing of that report depends on the imaging center and your care team.
