Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Upper Arm — Without Contrast
An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the upper arm, helping evaluate muscles, tendons, joints, and other tissues without IV contrast.

What is this test?
An upper arm MRI is an imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of tissues in and around the upper arm. This version is performed without contrast, meaning no contrast dye is injected through an IV.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test to investigate persistent pain, swelling, weakness, trauma, or reduced movement in the upper arm. It can help assess muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, soft tissues, and bone.
How is the test performed?
You will lie on a table that moves into a large MRI scanner. The scanner makes loud knocking and ringing sounds, and you may be asked to remain still or hold your arm in a particular position. The scan usually takes 20 to 60 minutes.
How do I prepare for the test?
Tell the imaging staff about any implanted medical devices, metal in your body, allergies, pregnancy, or claustrophobia. Remove jewelry, watches, hearing aids, and other metal items before the scan and follow any instructions your clinician provides.
