Why This Test Might Be Ordered
Your healthcare provider may recommend this test if you have symptoms like painful urination, unusual discharge, or pelvic pain, or if you’re at higher risk for gonorrhea (e.g., sexually active, new partner, or recent exposure). It’s also used to diagnose infections in asymptomatic individuals or to confirm treatment success after antibiotics.
How the Test Works
A small sample (e.g., urine, vaginal swab, or throat swab) is collected and sent to a lab. The bacteria, if present, grow over 2–5 days in a controlled environment. A positive result means the lab detected *N. gonorrhoeae* based on visible growth or other lab markers.
Sample Collection
The sample is taken by a healthcare provider during a clinical visit. For urine, you may be asked to urinate into a sterile cup. For swabs, a cotton-tipped applicator touches affected areas (e.g., urethra, cervix, or throat). Avoid cleaning the area with soap or alcohol before collection.
Test Results and Follow-Up
Results are typically ready in 2–5 days. A positive result means you have gonorrhea and should start antibiotics immediately. A negative result means no bacteria were found in this sample, but you may still need further testing or retesting if symptoms persist.
