24-Hour Urinary Phosphate Measurement

Published: August 9, 2026Updated: August 17, 2026

This test measures the total amount of phosphate (a mineral) found in your urine over a 24-hour period. It helps assess how well your body is handling phosphate balance, which is important for bone health and kidney function.

Quick summary

["This test helps evaluate kidney function and phosphate metabolism over a full day’s urine output."]

Why This Test Is Done

Your doctor may order this test if they suspect conditions like kidney disease, metabolic bone disorders, or phosphate disorders. It can also help diagnose or monitor conditions affecting phosphate levels, such as hyperphosphatemia or hypophosphatemia, over time.

How the Test Works

You’ll collect all urine produced in a 24-hour period (typically from one morning to the next) in a special container. The collected urine is then sent to a lab for analysis to determine the total phosphate content.

Sample Collection

To prepare, start collecting urine immediately after your first morning void. Use a clean container and keep it refrigerated. Replace the lid between voids to prevent contamination. Finish collecting urine by the next morning, then send the entire sample to the lab.

What to Expect

There are no special preparations needed, but avoid certain medications or supplements that may affect phosphate levels (like some vitamins or phosphate supplements) for 48 hours before testing.

Reference range

Adult: 2.5-4.5 mg/dLN/A

Specimen: urine

No special preparation usually required. Stay well hydrated. Inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking.

Frequently asked questions

What does a high or low result mean?
High phosphate levels in urine may indicate kidney problems, excessive intake of phosphate-rich foods, or certain metabolic conditions. Low levels could suggest kidney disease, malabsorption issues, or other disorders affecting phosphate metabolism.
How often is this test repeated?
Your doctor may repeat this test if initial results are abnormal or if they need to monitor phosphate balance over time, especially in patients with chronic kidney disease or other related conditions.
Does diet affect this test?
Yes, phosphate is found in many foods (like dairy, nuts, and processed foods). Your doctor may recommend dietary adjustments or provide guidance on phosphate intake before testing to ensure accurate results.
