Why This Test Might Be Ordered

Your healthcare provider may recommend this test if you have symptoms like breast changes, irregular menstrual periods, infertility, or unexplained headaches. It could also be part of an evaluation for conditions like hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels) or hypoprolactinemia (low prolactin levels).

What to Expect Before the Test

No special preparation is usually needed, but you may be asked to fast for a few hours before the test if instructed by your doctor. Wear comfortable clothing and plan to stay for about 15 minutes while the blood is drawn. Avoid smoking or consuming caffeine for at least 30 minutes before the test if possible.

During the Test

A healthcare professional will insert a small needle into a vein in your arm or hand to collect a blood sample. You may feel a slight pinch or discomfort, but it usually lasts only a few seconds. The blood is then sent to a lab for analysis.

After the Test

After the blood is drawn, the needle is removed, and a bandage is applied. You can usually return to your normal activities immediately. If you experience any unusual pain, swelling, or signs of infection at the site, contact your healthcare provider.

Clinical interpretation

How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.

High prolactin levels may indicate conditions such as a pituitary tumor, thyroid disorders, kidney problems, or certain medications (like antidepressants or antipsychotics). Low prolactin levels might suggest pituitary damage, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions. Your doctor will interpret the results in the context of your symptoms and medical history.

Frequently asked questions

How long will I have to wait for my results?
Results are typically available within 1 to 3 business days, depending on your lab and healthcare provider. Your doctor will discuss the results with you during your follow-up visit.
What are the common causes of abnormal prolactin levels?
Common causes of elevated prolactin include pituitary adenomas (benign tumors), certain medications, thyroid disorders, and kidney problems. Low prolactin levels can result from pregnancy, pituitary damage, or certain medical conditions.
Can I take my medications before the test?
It’s best to check with your healthcare provider before stopping or adjusting any medications. Some medications, like those for mental health or pain management, may affect prolactin levels and should be discussed with your doctor.
