What is this test?

Breast duct endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to examine the ducts inside the breast. Photodynamic diagnosis or contrast-enhanced imaging may be used to make suspicious tissue easier to see, and the system may display images at up to 15 megapixel resolution.

Why might I need this test?

The test may be recommended for nipple discharge, a recurring breast lump, or other symptoms suggesting a duct lesion. It can help locate and assess abnormalities such as intraductal papillomas or suspicious changes that may require further testing.

How is the test performed?

After cleaning the breast, a clinician inserts a very small endoscope through a nipple opening and views the duct passages. The ducts may be gently washed or treated with an imaging agent, and photographs are taken; a small tissue sample may be collected if needed.

How do I prepare for the test?

Follow your clinician's specific instructions. Tell the care team about breast infections, prior reactions to dyes or photosensitizing medicines, allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding, because the contrast or imaging protocol may need to be adjusted.

Frequently asked questions

Is breast duct endoscopy painful?
Most people feel pressure or mild discomfort rather than sharp pain. A topical anesthetic may be used, and the clinician can explain what sensations to expect.
Does this test use radiation?
Breast duct endoscopy itself generally does not expose the breast to radiation. If a contrast agent or photosensitizing medicine is used, the clinician will explain its purpose and any precautions.
Can this test diagnose breast cancer?
It can identify and evaluate suspicious duct findings, but it cannot always determine cancer by itself. A biopsy or other diagnostic imaging may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.
