Why Is This Test Done?
Your healthcare provider may order this test if you have symptoms like muscle pain, weakness, or swelling, or if you have conditions such as smooth muscle tumors, muscle inflammation, or certain autoimmune diseases. It can also be part of a broader evaluation for unexplained muscle abnormalities.
What Does the Result Mean?
Elevated levels of smooth muscle actin may suggest conditions involving abnormal muscle growth or damage, such as certain tumors or inflammatory processes. Lower than expected levels might be less commonly associated with clinical findings but could be part of a comprehensive diagnostic workup.
Sample Collection and Preparation
A blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in your arm. The blood is processed to separate serum (the liquid part after clotting), and the smooth muscle actin protein is measured from this serum sample.
Common Conditions Monitored
This test is often used in the context of diagnosing or assessing smooth muscle tumors (such as leiomyomas), evaluating smooth muscle-related inflammation, or monitoring conditions like gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) or certain autoimmune myopathies.
Reference range
Adult males: 8-61 U/L; Adult females: 5-36 U/LN/A
No special preparation required. Avoid fatty meals before the test if possible.
