Why This Test Might Be Ordered
Your healthcare provider may recommend this test if you have a weakened immune system, are at high risk for pneumococcal infections, or if you’ve received a pneumococcal vaccine recently. It can also be used to monitor immune function in certain chronic conditions or after certain treatments.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is needed. You’ll have a small needle inserted into your vein (venipuncture) to draw blood. It usually takes a few minutes. If you’re nervous, let your provider know so they can help make it more comfortable.
What to Expect During the Test
The blood sample will be sent to a lab for analysis using an immunoassay method, which detects specific proteins from pneumococcal bacteria. Results are typically available within 24–48 hours.
What the Results Mean
Higher-than-expected levels may indicate recent pneumococcal infection or an immune response to vaccination. Lower-than-expected levels could suggest immune dysfunction or reduced protection. Your provider will discuss results in the context of your health and symptoms.
