What to Expect During the Test
You’ll lie on an exam table with electrodes attached to your skin. A trained technician will insert a thin needle into your muscles to record natural electrical activity. During some parts, you may feel a slight pinch or tingling as the needle stimulates your nerves.
How the Results Are Used
Results help diagnose conditions like muscle weakness, nerve damage, or disorders such as myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathy, or muscle diseases like muscular dystrophy.
Common Conditions Evaluated
This test is often used when symptoms like muscle twitching, weakness, or pain suggest nerve or muscle issues. It’s also part of diagnosing chronic pain syndromes or evaluating unexplained muscle abnormalities.
Preparation and Care
No special preparation is needed, but avoid caffeine or nicotine 24 hours before the test. Wear loose clothing and avoid lotions on the test areas. Follow-up care depends on your doctor’s recommendations based on the results.
