Why This Test Is Done
Your doctor may order this test if they suspect conditions like hypogonadism (low testosterone), delayed puberty, or other hormonal imbalances. It helps determine if your body can produce testosterone normally or if external factors are affecting it.
What to Expect Before the Test
You’ll receive a controlled dose of testosterone (a bolus) on two separate occasions. Blood samples will be taken at baseline, during, and after each dose to measure your response. Avoid alcohol and certain medications that may affect hormone levels for 24 hours before testing.
What Happens During the Test
A healthcare provider will draw blood samples from a vein in your arm at scheduled times. The samples are sent to a lab for analysis using immunoassay methods to measure testosterone concentration.
What the Results Mean
Results compare your natural testosterone levels to those after stimulation. Abnormal responses may indicate issues with hormone production, pituitary function, or other endocrine disorders. Your doctor will interpret results in the context of your symptoms and medical history.
