Why Is This Test Done?
Your healthcare provider may order this test if you have symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever that could suggest a bacterial infection in your digestive system. It’s also used to diagnose conditions like pseudomembranous colitis or other infections caused by thermophilic *Clostridium* species.
What Does the Test Involve?
A small sample of your stool is collected in a special container and sent to a lab. The sample is then cultured under conditions that encourage the growth of thermophilic bacteria. If bacteria are present, they will appear as colonies on the culture medium after a few days.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is usually needed, but you may be asked to avoid certain medications that could affect test results. If you have a recent history of antibiotic use, let your provider know.
What to Expect After the Test
Results are typically available within 48 to 72 hours. If bacteria are found, your provider will work with you to determine the best course of treatment, which may include antibiotics.
