What is this test?
This blood test checks for thyroid colloid antibodies, also called thyroglobulin antibodies. These antibodies are directed against thyroglobulin, a protein stored in the thyroid gland.
Why might I need this test?
Your clinician may order this test when symptoms or other thyroid tests suggest an autoimmune thyroid disorder. It is often included with thyroid antibody testing, such as thyroid peroxidase antibody testing.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is collected and analyzed in a laboratory for the presence of thyroid colloid antibodies. This is generally a qualitative test, reported as positive or negative, although some laboratories may also provide a measured level.
How do I prepare for the test?
Fasting is usually not required. Tell your clinician about any biotin-containing supplements because some laboratory methods can be affected by them, and do not stop prescribed medicines unless instructed.
Clinical interpretation
How abnormal results are interpreted and what conditions they suggest.
A positive result may occur with autoimmune thyroid conditions, including Hashimoto thyroiditis and Graves disease. Antibodies can also be present in some people without thyroid disease, so the result must be interpreted with symptoms, thyroid function tests, and other antibody findings. A negative result does not completely rule out an autoimmune thyroid condition.
Short name
Thyroid colloid antibody
