What is this test?
This blood test measures the amount of cholesterol carried in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles. VLDL is made mainly by the liver and helps transport triglycerides to body tissues.
Why might I need this test?
VLDL cholesterol may be included in a lipid panel or checked when triglycerides are elevated. It can help your clinician evaluate cholesterol levels and cardiovascular risk.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is drawn and analyzed in a laboratory. Depending on the laboratory method, VLDL cholesterol may be measured directly or calculated from other cholesterol and triglyceride measurements.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's instructions about fasting, because eating can raise triglycerides and affect lipid results. If fasting is requested, it is commonly for 8 to 12 hours, and water is usually allowed.
Reference range
Optimal: <100 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
