What is this test?
VLDL cholesterol measures the cholesterol carried by very-low-density lipoprotein particles. It is usually calculated from other lipid panel results, especially triglycerides and HDL cholesterol, rather than measured directly.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be ordered to evaluate cholesterol levels, high triglycerides, and cardiovascular risk. It can also help guide lifestyle changes or treatment for abnormal lipid levels.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is drawn from a vein and analyzed as part of a lipid panel. The laboratory then estimates VLDL cholesterol using the triglyceride, total cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol results.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's instructions about fasting. If fasting is required, it is commonly 8 to 12 hours, and water is usually allowed. Tell your clinician if you have recently changed medications or supplements.
Reference range
Optimal: <100 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
