VLDL Cholesterol, Serum/Plasma — Calculated, Substance Concentration
A calculated blood test estimating cholesterol carried in very low-density lipoprotein particles, which transport triglyceride-rich lipids.
["VLDL cholesterol is usually calculated from other lipid results and is interpreted alongside LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides."]

What is this test?
VLDL cholesterol measures the estimated amount of cholesterol in very low-density lipoprotein particles. These particles carry cholesterol and especially triglycerides through the bloodstream.
Why might I need this test?
This test may be included in a lipid panel to help assess cardiovascular risk. Your clinician may also use it when evaluating high triglycerides, cholesterol treatment, or overall lipid status.
How is the test performed?
A blood sample is taken from a vein. The laboratory usually calculates VLDL cholesterol from other results in the same sample, commonly total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, although calculation methods can vary.
How do I prepare for the test?
Follow your clinician's fasting instructions. For a lipid panel, fasting for at least 9 to 12 hours may be recommended, and water is generally the only permitted drink unless your clinician says otherwise.
Reference range
Optimal: <100 mg/dLN/A
Fasting for 12-14 hours preferred. Water is permitted. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
