Why This Test Is Done
Your doctor may order this test if you have symptoms like excessive bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods, easy bruising), prolonged bleeding after surgery, or if you have a family history of bleeding disorders. It may also be used to monitor treatment for von Willebrand disease or other clotting conditions.
How the Test Works
A blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm. The sample is sent to a lab where it is analyzed using an immunoassay method to detect and quantify VWF protein levels.
Sample Collection
You’ll typically have a small needle inserted into your arm to draw blood. This process is quick and usually causes only minor discomfort. You may feel a slight pinch or sting, but most people tolerate it well. Rest for a few minutes afterward to avoid excessive bruising.
What to Expect Before the Test
No special preparation is needed for this test. However, inform your doctor about any medications you’re taking, especially blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin, as they may affect your results.
