Common uses
Antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection in adults
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 40 kg who have not previously been treated with integrase strand transfer inhibitors. It is used as a complete antiretroviral regimen and should not be used with other HIV medications.
Abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block the reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing viral RNA from being converted to DNA. Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the integrase enzyme, preventing viral DNA from integrating into host cell DNA.
Patients must be screened for HLA-B*5701 before starting abacavir due to risk of severe hypersensitivity reactions. Should not be used in patients with hepatic impairment. May cause immune reconstitution syndrome. Does not cure HIV and must be taken consistently to remain effective.
