Primarily used for acute migraine headaches, especially those accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Also prescribed for tension-type headaches and other painful conditions where nausea is present. May be used for general pain management when associated with gastric discomfort.
Acetaminophen inhibits cyclooxygenase enzymes in the brain, reducing prostaglandin production to relieve pain and fever. Metoclopramide blocks dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin receptors, relieving nausea, promoting stomach emptying, and providing additional analgesic effects. The combination may provide synergistic benefits for migraine relief.
Should not exceed maximum recommended dose of acetaminophen (4g daily in adults) to avoid liver damage. Metoclopramide carries risk of tardive dyskinesia with prolonged use; avoid in patients with Parkinson's disease. May cause drowsiness—use caution when driving. Not recommended for long-term use. Inform your doctor of any history of movement disorders, seizures, or depression.
