Acetaminophen / Pentazocine

Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Acetaminophen/Pentazocine is a combination analgesic medication used to manage moderate to moderately severe pain. Acetaminophen provides pain relief and fever reduction through COX enzyme inhibition, while pentazocine acts as a partial opioid agonist at mu receptors to enhance pain control. This combination is typically prescribed when non-opioid analgesics alone are insufficient for pain management.

Management of moderate to moderately severe pain where other non-opioid analgesics are inadequate. May be used for acute pain following surgery, injury, or other conditions requiring opioid-level pain control.

Pentazocine acts as a partial agonist at mu opioid receptors in the brain, reducing pain perception. Acetaminophen works peripherally and centrally by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes and activating serotonergic pathways, providing additional analgesia and fever reduction.

Contains an opioid component (pentazocine), so carries risks of dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal with prolonged use. Should be used at the lowest effective dose for shortest duration. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants. Monitor liver function due to acetaminophen component. Not recommended for use in patients with head injuries, respiratory depression, or porphyria.
