Albiglutide is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults to improve glycemic control. It is used when diet and exercise alone are insufficient, and may be prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.

As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, albiglutide mimics the action of the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide-1. It stimulates insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner, suppresses glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, and promotes feelings of fullness, all of which contribute to better blood sugar control.

Albiglutide is not indicated for use in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, and injection site reactions. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis and is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. As with all GLP-1 receptor agonists, there may be an associated risk of thyroid C-cell tumors.
