This medication is primarily used to prevent and treat bronchospasm in adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It may also be used as a rescue inhaler for acute asthma symptoms or as supplemental therapy for patients already on maintenance inhalers.

Albuterol is a beta-2 agonist that stimulates receptors in airway muscles, causing them to relax and dilate. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic that blocks acetylcholine from binding to muscarinic receptors in the airways, preventing muscle constriction. Together, they provide complementary bronchodilation with faster onset and longer duration than either agent alone.

This is a rescue medication, not a controller therapy. Do not exceed prescribed doses as overuse may worsen breathing. Rinse mouth after inhalation to reduce dry mouth and thrush. Seek immediate medical attention if bronchospasm worsens despite treatment. Inform your doctor of heart conditions as albuterol may increase heart rate.
