Aliskiren Valsartan

Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Aliskiren/valsartan is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. It combines two blood pressure-lowering agents that work at different points in the renin-angiotensin system to more effectively reduce blood pressure than either component alone. This medication is typically prescribed when single-agent therapy is insufficient for adequate blood pressure control.

Quick summary

A combination blood pressure medication pairing a direct renin inhibitor with an angiotensin receptor blocker for enhanced hypertension control.

Treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults when monotherapy is inadequate. May be used as initial therapy in patients requiring multiple agents to achieve blood pressure targets.

Contains two complementary agents: aliskiren (direct renin inhibitor) blocks renin's conversion of angiotensinogen to angiotensin I, while valsartan (angiotensin II receptor blocker) prevents angiotensin II from binding to its receptors. Together, they provide dual blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) at different points.

Contraindicated in pregnancy (risk of fetal harm), diabetes patients using ARBs or ACE inhibitors, and patients with angioedema history. May cause hyperkalemia, hypotension, and kidney impairment. Avoid concomitant ACE inhibitor or ARB use. Not recommended for patients with diabetes or renal impairment (eGFR <60).
