Published: July 27, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Allopurinol/Colchicine is a combination medication used to manage gout, a type of arthritis caused by uric acid crystal buildup in joints. Allopurinol lowers uric acid production in the body, while colchicine reduces inflammation and prevents gout flares. This combination is particularly useful when starting urate-lowering therapy, as initiating allopurinol can sometimes trigger gout attacks that colchicine helps prevent.

Treatment and prevention of gout attacks, including patients initiating urate-lowering therapy. Used for chronic gout management in patients who experience recurrent flares.

Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, an enzyme involved in uric acid production, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels. Colchicine binds to tubulin, inhibiting microtubule polymerization and reducing neutrophil migration and phagocytosis, which decreases the inflammatory response to urate crystals.

May increase risk of bone marrow suppression, liver toxicity, and severe drug interactions. Should be started at low doses with gradual titration. Adequate hydration is important. Not recommended during pregnancy. Colchicine dose adjustments may be needed with certain medications and in patients with renal/hepatic impairment.
