Treats symptoms of excess stomach acid including heartburn, acid reflux, GERD, peptic ulcers, and functional dyspepsia. Also used as a phosphate binder in patients with hyperphosphatemia and chronic kidney disease.
Acts as a buffering agent by neutralizing hydrochloric acid in the stomach, raising gastric pH. This reduces the irritant effects of acid on the esophageal and gastric mucosa. Additionally binds to dietary phosphate in the gut for elimination.
May cause constipation or aluminum toxicity with prolonged high-dose use. Can interfere with absorption of other medications (take 1-2 hours apart). Should be used with caution in patients with kidney impairment. Avoid in patients with suspected bowel obstruction.
